For the past three days, a cold snap has wreaked havoc in northern Japan.

A record snowfall of 32 inches fell in northern and eastern Japan for the first time in 26 years on Friday. An additional 28 inches of snow fell in the region on Saturday.

Some towns have recorded a total snowfall of nearly 10 feet high.

In the city of Niigata, nearly a hundred people had to find shelter on Sunday after their cars broke down as a blizzard whipped through the port town.

In the hot spring resort town of Kusatsu, locals were busy trying to shovel their way out from the heavy snow.

“I wanted to get to the point where I could see the car’s front somewhat, but there’s nothing I can do with this.”

Truckloads of snow were taken to the local natural hot spring river.

“We haven’t had this much snow in recent years.”

Even tourists were caught off guard by the bad weather.

“We were going to go skiing today, but can’t thanks to the car going dead on us.”

“We had insane amount of snow when we arrived and the bus that was carrying us to the hotel got in an accident so we’re really shocked.”

At the ski resort of Shigakoen, a hotel and its parking lot was buried by a snow avalanche that pushed two tourist buses into its lobby, injuring two people.
